So far throughout
this year’s edition of the UEFA Champions League we have seen some very
interesting matches. The group stage has just ended with familiar faces advancing
towards the last 16 knock-out stage.
The draws were held on the 17th of
December 2018, in the UEFA Headquarters in Nyon. In the knockout phase, teams
play against each other across two legs on a home-and-away basis, up until the
final. In the round of 16 draw, eight group winners are seeded, and the eight
group runners-up are unseeded. The seeded teams are then drawn against the
unseeded teams, with the seeded teams hosting the second leg.
The advanced
teams consist of: four English clubs which are; Manchester United F.C., Manchester
City F.C., Liverpool F.C. and Tottenham Hotspurs F.C., three Spanish clubs
which are; F.C. Barcelona, Real Madrid C.F. (current holders) and Atletico
Madrid, three German clubs which are; F.C. Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and
F.C. Schalke 04, two Italian clubs which are; Juventus F.C. and A.S. Roma, two
French clubs which are; Paris Saint-Germain F.C. and Olympique Lyonnais, one Portuguese
club; F.C. Porto and one Dutch club which is AFC Ajax.
I believe
two of the most interesting and unpredictable match-ups which have emerged from
these draws are: F.C. Bayern Munich versus Liverpool F.C., Juventus F.C. versus
Atletico Madrid and Manchester United F.C. versus Paris Saint-Germain F.C. These
matches will surely be a hard battle for all the clubs because without a shadow
of a doubt they all will fight for a spot to advance to the upcoming knock-out
stage. There are other thrilling matches such as: Tottenham Hotspur F.C. versus
Borussia Dortmund, F.C. Schalke 04 versus Manchester City F.C. and Olympique
Lyonnais versus F.C. Barcelona. The remaining match-ups consist of: Real Madrid
C.F. versus AFC Ajax and A.S. Roma versus F.C. Porto.
The first
leg of these matches will be held between the 12th and 20th
of February while the second leg matches will be played between the 5th
and the 13th of March. Surely fans all over the world will be eager
and excited for these matches as will I.
